The purpose of student work is to support young people’s well-being and to respond to students’ mental and spiritual needs.

The number of Finnish students abroad is increasing, and at the same time the need for support is growing. Over the past ten years, the number of degree students has doubled. Gaining admission to higher education in Finland is difficult, and therefore more and more people apply as degree students to English-taught programmes abroad.

Social counsellors of the Finnish Seamen’s Mission have long been involved in student work, for example in the Netherlands and England. The work has been further developed, and student work in Europe is now carried out in cooperation with the Church’s work among Finns abroad and Finnish chaplains in educational institutions. Chaplains in educational institutions usually belong to a broader international student network (CEUC) and also have knowledge of the situations in other European countries.

The purpose of the student work network is to support young people’s well-being and at the same time to increase awareness and visibility of local Finnish communities.
