Maritime Safety Award Sea Sunday

The Maritime Safety Award Sea Sunday is a recognition established in 1997 by Finnish authorities and organizations representing professional and recreational maritime activities. The decision to grant the award is made annually. The award is presented to an individual or organization that has made a distinguished contribution to maritime safety.

The purpose of the award is to encourage the development of maritime safety. The grounds for the award may include a concrete action, an insight, an attitude, a development project, or another factor related to safety.

The award is primarily presented to a named individual, but for special reasons it may also be awarded to a ship’s crew, a shipping company, an authority, or another organization.

The award committee consists of Finnish authorities and organizations representing professional and recreational maritime activities, and the Finnish Seamen’s Church serves as the chair organization of the committee.

The Helmsman Sculpture

The award is an honorary distinction symbolized by an object presented to the recipient. The object is a 36 cm high bronze casting of Emil Cedercreutz’s Helmsman sculpture, the plaster model of which was found at the Cedercreutz Museum in Harjavalta.

The original Helmsman sculpture was erected in Mariehamn in 1933 as a memorial to those lost at sea. At that time, Agricultural Counselor Eliel Sundström acquired the sculpture from Cedercreutz and donated it to the City of Mariehamn to honor the memory of his father, a sea captain, and other seafarers who lost their lives at sea. The sculpture is dedicated to the people of Åland who have found their final resting place in the sea.
